Long Weekend Arts Festival – Aug 30-Sept 2nd

Join us over the labour day long weekend for our 2nd annual Long Weekend Arts Festival! We have a weekend full of great music, food, and art-making to cap off the summer! All events are family-friendly, and pay-what-you-can unless otherwise indicated.

Jazz, cocktails and kick-off dinner with Gabriel Palatchi Band and Big Al, Proprietor

We’ll start off the weekend with a cocktail-hour set of classic jazz featuring the local trio Big Al, Proprietor. Big Al – piano, double bass, and sax – are well-known on the Island from their appearances at many community events. The bar will be slinging cocktail specials, and their will be snacks from the kitchen. Big Al, Proprietor – Friday Aug 30th 5:30-6:30pm, pay-what-you-can

Immediately following Big Al, we’re delighted to be hosting the Gabriel Palatchi Band, who are touring across Canada in support of their new record Caja Musical. This latin jazz group – who split their time between Mexico, Argentina, and Canada – are lead by pianist Gabriel Palatchi, and fuse afrocuban, tango, klezmer, funk, and more. They will take us through dinner and into the night! Gabriel Palatchi Band – Friday Aug 30th 7-9pm, pay-what-you-can. RSVP on facebook here.

For this year’s Long Weekend fest, we’re trying something new. Due to huge community demand we’re bringing Toronto’s best classic rock cover band Dwayne Gretzky for a special show in the Ward’s Island Association clubhouse on Sunday September 1st. (And don’t worry – the next day is a holiday!) The WIA clubhouse is the main room of the building that the Island Cafe rents from. So, if you’ve ever wanted to see the inside of this historic building, here is your chance! We’ll have a big family-style roast chicken dinner and cheap pints at the Cafe, and then at 9pm the band will start up inside the clubhouse! If you haven’t seen this band before, prepare to be blown away by their energetic takes on all the best classic songs by Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen, and more. Please note that since this show is taking place inside the clubhouse, the admission will be $10 at the door. RSVP on facebook here.  Below is Dwayne doing the Boss!

Brunch en Blanc – 9am-12:30pm

white laceWe’re excited for the return of Brunch en Blanc this year! This is  our last chance to gather in the morning this summer, and it’s also the last day that it’s traditional to wear white (if you’re old school). So come to our brunch in your finest white threads! The kitchen is creating some beautiful brunch specials, and our hosts will have treats for those wearing white!

Ivy Mairi + Matthew Bailey with special guests – 7pm, pay-what-you-can

Our concert curator and host Ivy Mairi will take the stage for the final night of our mini festival. Alongside Ivy will be her good friend and collaborator Matthew Bailey (who also has his own residency at the Cafe this summer, details here). The pair will debut the new music they wrote this winter during Matt’s stay at the Gas Station studio at Artscape Gibraltar Point. This intimate performance will feature a hoop dance by Martha Farquhar-McDonnell and other musical guests! RSVP on facebook here. Below is a video of Ivy and Matt doing a Neil Young song while on tour in New Brunswick last fall…

In addition to these events, we will also be doing some easy community art-making throughout the weekend! All kids and grownups are encouraged to participate in the creation of our group mural and art cards that will hang during the Sunday and Monday night performances! Ask your server for details!

Please note that we will not be taking reservations during the Long Weekend festival. All tables are first-come-first-served. Those who don’t wish to eat and drink on the patio are welcome to bring their own snacks/blankets/chairs and take in the shows from the lawn!
