Join us over the labour day long weekend for our 3rd annual Long Weekend Arts Festival! We have a weekend full of great music, food, and art-making to cap off the summer! All events are family-friendly, and pay-what-you-can unless otherwise indicated.
FRIDAY AUGUST 29th
Kickoff dinner and concert with the Cafe’s own Charlotte Cornfield!
Charlotte is an extremely talented musician, who’s style comes from the deep lyricism and raw emotion of Mitchell, Dylan, and Young, mixed with the intense energy and hookiness of late-70’s New York rock and roll. Two Horses (her album) has received praise from such industry luminaries as Seymour Stein, Alan Cross and Martin Atkins and has vaulted Cornfield to mainstay status on the Canadian music scene. Cornfield has appeared at Hillside, The Montreal Jazz Festival, South by Southwest, Canada Music Week, In the Dead of Winter, and Pop Montreal, and has shared the stage with Anais Mitchell, Ron Sexsmith, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Phosphorescent, Dead Prez, and many more. She’s also scooped an armful of awards along the way, including the Montreal Jazz Festival Award, the St. Ambroise Music Bursary, and many more. She is currently splitting her time between Toronto (and Ward’s Island) and New York City working on a new album.

SATURDAY AUGUST 30th–ARTIST’S MARKET
The Island Cafe will be hosting an artist’s market on Saturday from 1pm-6pm. This is open to any artist that wishes to sell or showcase their work on the lawn in front of the cafe. Please contact Maeve if you would like to book at table at firstname.lastname@example.org. This is a wonderful opportunity to see some artwork in a relaxed outdoor setting. Come on out and support local artists!
SUNDAY AUGUST 31st- Sam Cash and The Romantic Dogs
Due to popular demand, we are hosting another big show in the clubhouse. Last year Dwayne Gretsky rocked the house, and now we are more than pleased to have Sam Cash and The Romantic Dogs. When asked about their shows, the band says this about their music: “we’re loud, we’re scrappy, we make mistakes when we play-but we’re buddies. These songs transmit a feeling-a sort of excitement.” This rock show is not to be missed–and don’t worry – the next day is a holiday!
The WIA clubhouse is the main room of the building that the Island Cafe rents from. So, if you’ve ever wanted to see the inside of this historic building, here is your chance! We’ll have a big family-style roast chicken dinner and cheap pints at the Cafe, and then at 9pm the band will start up inside the clubhouse! If you haven’t seen this band before, prepare to be blown away by their energetic original tunes and plenty of great takes on old classics. Please note that since this show is taking place inside the clubhouse, the admission will be $10 at the door. RSVP on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/events/720384574702392/?context=create&source=49)
“Sam Cash’s song writing captures a youthful angst, filtered through a compassionate eye… confident, natural use of simple, eloquent language that you’d expect from someone with many more years behind them” – Hawksley Workman
MONDAY SEPTEMBER 1st
Brunch en Blanc – 9am-12:30pm
We’re excited for the return of Brunch en Blanc this year! This is our last chance to gather in the morning this summer, and it’s also the last day that it’s traditional to wear white (if you’re old school). So come to our brunch in your finest white threads! The kitchen is creating some beautiful brunch specials, and our hosts will have treats for those wearing white!
Matthew Bailey with special guests – 7pm, pay-what-you-can
Matthew Bailey will be playing at the cafe with some ultra special guests from the cafe staff! This talented musician has blown us away a number of times this summer, from his band The Plank-Tones to his opening set with Ivy Mairi. Matthew Bailey always brings a great show. There may even be an extra special hoop performance! Stay tuned for more details.

In addition to these events, we will also be doing some easy community art-making throughout the weekend! All kids and grownups are encouraged to participate in the creation of our group mural and art cards that will hang during the Sunday and Monday night performances! Ask your server for details!
Please note that we will not be taking reservations during the Long Weekend festival. All tables are first-come-first-served. Those who don’t wish to eat and drink on the patio are welcome to bring their own snacks/blankets/chairs and take in the shows from the lawn!
